Heaven: Too good to be True

May 20, 2018

Sermon Notes:

Myths of Heaven & Hell

Misconceptions about going to heaven.

Misconceptions about going to hell.

Heaven seems too good to be true.

Scripture References:

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved… For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” ~Romans 10:9-10,13

“Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.  He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.’ Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’” ~John 3:1-3

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” ~John 3:16

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” ~Ephesians 2:8

Believing There is a God is Enough

May 27, 2018

Sermon Notes:

"Believing there is a God is enough"
I. .Some problems with this view.
     A. Vagueness-  (Just opinions) What are they based on?
     B. Lack of positive effect.
"You believe there is a god; good, even the demons believe that and shudder". ~James 2:19
Most people don't respect God even that much today.
II. Find the solution.
   A. Find the truth to base your belief on.
1.Jesus.  "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father (God) but through me. "~ John 14:6
       2. God's Word.  (The Bible)  ..."the holy scriptures are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
so that the child of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." ~ 2 Timothy 3:15b-17
  B. Must involve action. (Obedience to God)  "Be not just hearers, but doers of the Word."~James 1:22
III. What do you believe?
  A. Need for a personal answer.
       1. Jesus and his disciples.  Matthew 16:13-19
Peter's reply  "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." ~John 16:16
      2. How do you reply?
   B. How do I come to the right answer?
      1. Come to know Jesus personally.  John 3:16
      2. Learn God's truth.  In the Bible.   2 Timothy 3:15b-17
      3. Live the truth.  (Do what it says.  Obedience to God's Spirit.)  James 1:22
What do you believe about God today?
What are you doing about it?   What are you willing to do in the future?

Scripture References:

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”~Matthew 16:13-19

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.~John 3:16

All in God's Will

June 3, 2018

Sermon Notes:

Our Choices Matter

God wants the best for you when following God.

Evil and destruction are not apart of God’s plan.

Salvation is the work of Jesus, but our choice.

Sermon Notes:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” ~Romans 8:28

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’” ~Jeremiah 29:11-13

“This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.” ~1 Timothy 2:3-5

Don't Let Your Faith Change You

June 10, 2018

Sermon Notes:

Transformed by Christ

When in Christ, change is inevitable.

Faith can change you for the worse.

Faith can bring you to greater holiness.

Scripture References:

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” ~Romans 12:3

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” ~Romans 12:2
